Rooted in the pioneering spirit of our Swedish forerunners, we strive to be a community where we are grounded in ancient faith practices and traditions, and equally open to speaking about & experiencing faith with a new generation.

The faith of our parents…

Messiah’s doors opened in 1908 when the fledgling community (home to the newly-founded Bethany College!) determined that a rising generation of youth, while mostly fluent in the language and customs of their Swedish immigrant ancestors, yearned to worship in their own idiom.  From its inception, Messiah’s identity has been about reaching out, crossing boundaries, and uniting ancient and new.  This is also true of our home town, Lindsborg: a place that delights in beloved traditions — and where something new is always happening!

…in the language of our children.

Today, we strive to keep asking how to “talk faith” with the next generation.  We are a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, itself a relatively new body in the history of denominations; and we are located in the Central States Synod.  Through our denominational levels and a wide variety of partner organizations, we’re part of an ongoing conversation about the nature of faithful discipleship for a new century.
